Hemifacial Spasm

What it is:

Hemifacial Spasm (HFS) is a rare neurological condition that causes involuntary muscle contractions on one side of the face. These spasms typically begin around the eye and may progress to the cheek, mouth, and jaw, leading to facial asymmetry and discomfort. While not life-threatening, HFS can significantly affect a person’s confidence, social interactions, and quality of life.

Who It Affects:

Hemifacial spasm most commonly affects middle-aged and older adults, with a higher prevalence in women. It is more frequently observed on the left side of the face, and although rare, it affects approximately 11 out of every 100,000 people.

Common Symptoms Include:

  • Twitching or spasms around the eye, often the first sign
  • Involuntary eye closure
  • Spasms that pull the mouth to one side
  • Muscle contractions in the cheek, jaw, or neck
  • Symptoms that worsen with stress, fatigue, or anxiety
  • Rarely, twitching may occur on both sides of the face, but not simultaneously

Causes of Hemifacial Spasm:

  • Compression of the facial nerve by a blood vessel near the brainstem (most common)
  • Facial nerve injury
  • Tumors or structural abnormalities
  • Vascular malformations or aneurysms
  • Bell’s palsy, ear infections, or other cranial nerve disorders
