Radiculopathy

What Is Radiculopathy?

Radiculopathy is a condition caused by compression or irritation of a nerve root as it exits the spinal column. This leads to pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness along the path of the affected nerve. It can occur in different regions of the spine:

  • Cervical Radiculopathy – affects the neck and arms
  • Thoracic Radiculopathy – affects the upper back and chest
  • Lumbar Radiculopathy – affects the lower back and legs (often called sciatica)

Causes of Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy is typically caused by:

  • Herniated discs
  • Bone spurs from arthritis
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of spinal canal)
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Trauma or injury
  • Tumors or infections (less common)
  • Scoliosis or abnormal spinal curvature

Symptoms of Radiculopathy

Symptoms vary depending on the location of the affected nerve:

  • Sharp, shooting pain in the neck, back, arms, or legs
  • Numbness or tingling in the extremities
  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of reflexes
  • Pain that worsens with movement, coughing, or sneezing

Diagnosis

Diagnosis may include:

  • Physical exam and neurological assessment
  • MRI or CT scans to visualize nerve compression
  • X-rays for bone structure
  • Electromyography (EMG) to assess nerve function

Treatment Options

1. Conservative Management

  • Pain relievers (NSAIDs, acetaminophen)
  • Steroid injections to reduce inflammation
  • Physical therapy to improve posture and strength
  • Lifestyle changes (weight loss, ergonomic adjustments)

2. Advanced Treatments

  • Minimally invasive surgery (e.g., microdiscectomy)
  • Spinal decompression procedures
  • Spinal fusion (in severe cases)
