Scoliosis

What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways into an “S” or “C” shape. It can affect the thoracic (mid-back), lumbar (lower back), or both regions. While some cases are mild and asymptomatic, others can cause pain, postural changes, and even breathing difficulties in severe cases.

Types of Scoliosis

  1. Idiopathic Scoliosis

    • Most common type
    • Cause unknown but may have genetic links
    • Often diagnosed in adolescents
  2. Congenital Scoliosis

    • Present at birth due to malformed vertebrae
  3. Neuromuscular Scoliosis

    • Associated with conditions like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or spina bifida
  4. Degenerative (Adult-Onset) Scoliosis

    • Caused by aging, arthritis, or osteoporosis

Symptoms of Scoliosis

  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • One shoulder blade more prominent
  • Waist asymmetry
  • Rib cage protrusion on one side
  • Leaning to one side
  • Back pain or stiffness (more common in adults)
  • Fatigue or difficulty breathing in severe cases

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically includes:

  • Physical exam (e.g., Adam’s forward bend test)
  • X-rays to measure spinal curvature (Cobb angle)
  • MRI or CT scans if underlying conditions are suspected
  • Scoliometer for initial screening

Treatment Options

1. Observation

  • For mild curves (<20°)
  • Regular monitoring with X-rays every 6–12 months

2. Bracing

  • For moderate curves (20–40°) in growing children
  • Prevents progression but doesn’t reverse curvature
  • Worn 13–23 hours/day depending on severity

3. Physical Therapy & Exercises

  • Strengthens muscles and improves posture
  • Includes scoliosis-specific methods like the Schroth Method
  • May include yoga, Pilates, or chiropractic care for pain relief

4. Surgery

  • Recommended for severe curves (>45–50°)
  • Spinal fusion is the most common procedure
  • May involve rods, screws, and bone grafts to stabilize the spine
