Dr. Burks is a neurosurgeon specializing in treatment of cerebrovascular disease, which includes surgery for brain aneurysms and other causes of stroke. His other areas of expertise include brain tumors and spine surgery.

He is dually-trained in neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology, having completed fellowship training at both the University of Southern California and the University of Miami. Dr. Burks also completed neurosurgery residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital with focused training in cerebrovascular, spine, and skull base surgery. During that time, he also enjoyed mentoring numerous medical students and residents, and was awarded Best Resident Teacher as Chief Resident. 
 
Previously, Dr. Burks attended the University of Oklahoma as an undergraduate where he was named a member of Phi Beta Kappa and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism. He subsequently obtained his medical doctorate from the University of Oklahoma. He also worked for a year there as the research coordinator for the department of neurosurgery where he gained a wide background in statistics and academic publishing.
 
His research focuses on understanding the pathophysiology of cerebral aneurysms to aid in the development of novel devices and techniques. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles and has been awarded multiple grants from the NIH.
