A minimally invasive procedure that treats carotid artery stenosis a narrowing of the arteries supplying blood to the brain by placing a stent to keep the artery open and reduce stroke risk.
May include transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), stroke-like symptoms, limb weakness, speech difficulties, vision changes, or dizziness. Many patients are asymptomatic but still at risk for stroke.
A catheter is inserted through the groin or wrist and guided to the carotid artery. A balloon may be inflated to widen the artery, followed by placement of a metal mesh stent to keep it open. Recovery is typically short, with most patients discharged within 24 hours. Risks include stroke, restenosis, bleeding, and blood clots
