Carpal tunnel release

What it is:

Carpal tunnel release is a surgical procedure used to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist, leading to symptoms like pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers.

Symptoms:

include numbness, tingling, and burning sensations in the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers (but not the pinky), often worsening at night or during activities like holding a phone or steering wheel; other signs include hand weakness, frequent dropping of objects, and pain that may radiate up the arm.

Treatment:

Treatment typically begins with nonsurgical options such as wrist splints, physical therapy, and corticosteroid injections; if these fail, surgery is performed to cut the ligament pressing on the nerve, relieving pressure and improving function.
