Craniotomy for stroke

What it is:

A surgical procedure where part of the skull is temporarily removed to access the brain and treat life-threatening complications from stroke especially hemorrhagic strokes caused by bleeding in the brain.

Symptoms:

Sudden severe headache, vomiting, seizures, loss of coordination, speech difficulties, or neurological deficits. These symptoms often indicate increased intracranial pressure or bleeding that may require urgent surgical intervention.

Treatment:

Craniotomy allows neurosurgeons to remove blood clots, repair ruptured vessels, and relieve pressure on the brain. It may be combined with minimally invasive techniques or endoscopic tools. Recovery includes ICU monitoring, rehabilitation (physical, speech, occupational therapy), and long-term follow-up to restore function and prevent complications.
