Kyphoplasty

What it is:

A minimally invasive procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures, often caused by osteoporosis, trauma, or spinal tumors. It involves inserting a balloon into the fractured vertebra to restore height, followed by injection of bone cement to stabilize the bone and relieve pain.

Symptoms:

Severe back pain, reduced mobility, hunched posture (kyphosis), and nerve compression symptoms like numbness or tingling. These often result from collapsed vertebrae due to weakened bones.

Treatment:

Performed under local anesthesia and sedation, the procedure takes about an hour per vertebra. Most patients experience pain relief within 48 hours and can resume normal activities shortly after. Risks are rare but may include infection, bleeding, nerve damage, or cement leakage.
