Peripheral nerve stimulation

What it is:

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small implanted or external device to deliver mild electrical impulses to specific peripheral nerves, disrupting pain signals before they reach the brain and providing relief from chronic pain.

Symptoms:

May indicate a need for PNS include persistent localized nerve pain, burning or tingling sensations, pain following surgery or trauma, or conditions like diabetic neuropathy, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), or post-herpetic neuralgia

Treatment:

Involves a trial phase where a temporary electrode is placed near the affected nerve to test effectiveness. If successful, a permanent device is implanted. Patients can control the stimulation using a remote, and recovery is typically quick with minimal downtime.
