Spinal cord stimulation

What it is:

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a pain management procedure where a small device is implanted to send mild electrical impulses to the spinal cord, interrupting pain signals before they reach the brain—often used when other treatments have failed.

Symptoms:

May include chronic nerve pain such as burning, shooting, or throbbing sensations, especially from conditions like failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), diabetic neuropathy, or post-surgical pain.

Treatment:

Involves a trial phase with temporary electrodes to test effectiveness, followed by permanent implantation of a pulse generator and electrodes if successful. Patients can adjust stimulation levels using a remote control, and recovery typically allows return to normal activities within a few weeks.
