Thoracic fusion

What it is:

Thoracic fusion surgery is a procedure that permanently joins two or more vertebrae in the mid-back (thoracic spine) using bone grafts, rods, and screws to stabilize the spine, relieve pain, and correct deformities such as scoliosis or kyphosis.

Symptoms:

Symptoms that may lead to thoracic fusion include chronic mid-back pain, spinal instability, nerve compression causing numbness or weakness, and progressive spinal deformities that interfere with mobility or organ function.

Treatment:

Involves a surgical approach either open or minimally invasive where damaged discs are removed and bone grafts are placed between vertebrae, secured with hardware. Recovery includes hospital stay, physical therapy, and gradual return to activity over several months.
